Burlington Gardens Festival 2015
Out of the studio into the street
Royal Academy of Arts, London
& Brown’s London Art Weekend
4 & 5 July 2015
I initiated and directed the Royal Academy’s first street festival, inhabiting the campus and immediate surrounds. We pedestrianised the street for the day, creating a temporary forecourt in front of the building, opened an original linking side passage and filled both with new artworks and performances, workshops, food, drink and music.
Art works included new works by RA Schools alumni Rachael Champion and recent graduate Henry Coleman. Inside the building there was an installation by Graham Gussin, a musical performance by Richard Wilson RA + Breathing Space, who sent sounds around the dramatic central stairwell, and an immersive sound-movement work 'Sound Bed' by choreographer and dancer Vera Tussing. The hidden link passage had a work by Felipe Castelblanco and artist Jonathan Armistead. The rarely seen historic studios of the RA Schools hosted Castelblanco’s ongoing project The Para-Site School with guest artists Melanie Coles, Serra Tansel and Shepherd Manyika.
There were also print workshops, theatrical life drawing classes and talks. A long table with a cloth designed by Will and Piers Alsop defined the street scape with food and drink on offer. There performances by TEYR and The Thumping Tomies and a live acoustic performances by Jenny Bell. The finale to the day was a travelling performance by Les Zoings with artist Bob and Roberta Smith RA.
